1st Conversation With a Bog

Oil on Canvas, 20 x24

I was supposed to be listening for sounds of game.  But, at first all I could hear was the wind rustling the leaves, or the trickle of water over the rocks.  Then I would listen to my breath and my heartbeat.  Soon my mind would wander to numerous boyhood things—the Neatsfoot Oil I recently put on my baseball glove, the incredible snag I made at shortstop yesterday or Mary Peck’s pretty blonde hair.

Seek Stillness Where There Isn't. Oil on Canvas 20 x 24

I found myself  entranced by the scene—the smells and radiating heat from the grasses as they are warmed by the sun, contrasted the coolness, the peacefulness and the activity of the water giving me a spectacular light show of reflections.  I didn’t realize until I was a senior in high school  that these were my first meditations, my first conversations with a bog.

The Answers Are Inside. Oil on Canvas, 20 x 24

These paintings are my humble attempt to capture the thoughts, feelings and wisdom of the bog.  The harmonies of color, the passionately painted water next to the quietly painted grasses.  This is as close as I could come to sharing those conversations through the voice of my art.  If you wish, sit in front of these paintings.  Listen.  Quietly.

Make a Purchase Inquiry

I don't know exactly when I first connected with a bog.  But it most certainly was as a young boy growing up in Maine.

From an early age, my father and grandfather used to take me hunting with them.  Curiously, I never liked the hunting—what I liked was the waiting, the sitting quietly.  We would sit at the edge of a bog, on the side of a field, or in a tree.  Listening.  Quietly.

Sit With Stillness, Listen. Oil on Canvas, 20 x 24

After some considerable time of mind wandering I would return to the present and look closer at the scene.  It became absorbing to really see the scene—the grass reeds coming up out of the water, the spots on the lilly pads, the incredible reflections off the water.

The lessons from those conversations shaped many of my views—that it is important to sit quietly now and then, that inspiration can be found in those moments and that the best things in life exhibit  complex simplicities —glorious harmonies of opposites like the stillness and activity of the bog water.
