| Birch Haven II, Oil on Russian Linen, 28x40 |
I have been asked how Vincent Van Gogh, Nikolai Timkov and Jackson
Pollock could come together in a painting. The bluesy moods of Van Gogh and the stark Russian impressionist landscapes of
Timkov are perhaps obvious partners. But Jackson Pollock? One can't possibly appreciate Jackson Pollock
until his work is experienced in person. The swirls, the drips and the drizzles are mesmerizing.
The feeling of getting lost in the movement of the paint. From my very first painting, my work has been exploring
the movement of paint on canvas--the creation of tension through the embedded passion in the paint that draws the viewer
deep into the painting.
My recent releases clearly illustrate this blend. "Birch Haven II," above, is an impressionist
celebration of light--when viewed from a distance. A blend of Van Gogh and Timkov. But up close, Pollock can be
seen in the details. Globs, drips and drizzles of paint invite you in to the painting--asking you to explore the passion
that each stroke delivered to the canvas.
In previous work I explored my deeply felt balance between the free movement
of paint and the need for grounding the viewer in the painting. And with some of these recent releases you can
see that my work is continuing to evolve. Witness, "Reflections of a Patriot," "Aspen," and "Saltmarsh in
Sagittarius." Could I let go of balancing form and movement? Can just color and movement of paint give the viewer
that portal to creative ecstasy?
Perhaps. Yet, I still get such a thrill from the form grounding the
viewer while it provides tension to the swirls upon giggles of paint leaping from the canvas. Witness "Walnut Hill
II" and "Autumn at the Footbridge." I am not sure where my work is going--and I certainly have no intention of controlling
it. I vowed from the moment I lit this fire to let it burn in any direction the wind takes it. Enjoy.
