Oil on Canvas, palette knife, 20 x 24

Okay I realize this is a little spooky, maybe--my kids certainly think it is.  But this painting is an example of the creative process working its magic in me.  I started this painting over 12 months before it was finished.  It started out as a painting that I knew from the beginning was going to be an iterative painting--that is, it was going to take me many, many sessions to finish.  It did.  I had a relatively fuzzy image of the composition, but had no idea how the painting would come to be.  Everytime I went back to the painting, I did some things, looked at it, did some more things, looked at it, still did not like it, so I set it aside again.  All along though I knew it was a work in process--I knew it would come together.  It did.  Perhaps like life itself.  The Final Gate.  Could it really look like that when we get there?
