The joy of having Jesus inside, the joy of the Holy Spirit taking residence in you, has been written about for over 2,000 years.  I don't know that I can add anything to what has been said.  I know how I felt before and I know how I feel now.  For me, the axis of those feelings, the blend of those feelings, the image and personification of those feelings, is the Passion of Christ.  The moment of pain, suffering, betrayal, loss, obedience, love, longing, reuniting, completion, joy, passion, mercy, thankfulness.

The Passion series is different than my previous work.  My wife finds them painful.  I can understand that.  But the artist in me needs to birth--and like child birth these are born in moments of raw emotion.  The finished works, however, I don't find painful at all.  They make me feel humble, loved, foregiven and extraordinarily thankful.

My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, thank you for loving me.  Thank you for loving all of us.

Passion V, 30x48, Acrylic on Canvas

Can Jesus give us a sense of peace?  Did He experience peace as He climbed Calvary Hill?  Can we feel God's glory coming upon us in splashes of yellow in the middle of our angst?  I needed to know--on a particularly bad day.  I think we can, through prayer, through thankfulness, through the grace God extends us and through His Word.

Passion IV, 16x20, Oil on Board

Alternating small and large strokes of the palette knife using classic warm and cool colors to give depth and light source make an impressionistic image of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Passion III, 24x36, Acrylic on Canvas.

Large loose strokes of the palette knife, and passionately flung splatters of paint dominate this canvas.  Lord, we pray that we could remain peaceful amidst the angst of our day.  As the paint flies in our lives, as Satan tries to dislodge our faith, may we quietly close our eyes and see your glory.

Passion II, 16x20 Oil on Canvas.

How can we ever imagine blending physical pain with love, foreknowledge and obedience? One moment succumbing to the pain in an audible cry, the next a humble nod of the head.  My Lord and Savior, thank you for your lessons in humility and obedience.  May we all come to our reckoning with you as humble servants.

Passion I, 52x39, Oil on Canvas.

This is a very large painting done with brick trowels and palette knives.  Imposing, powerful, and evokes passion from the viewer.  My wife is not fond of this entire series--it is too painful.  I can appreciate that.  Yet, I can't help but express the emotion of running from Christ as long as I did, translated into canvas and paint, morphing the pain of Christ's Passion into God's mercy, love and foregiveness.
